Under the command of Fernández, the factory moved to O'Reilly Street where it is at present.

Romeo and Juliet brand offers vitolas from medium to strong strength, with good combustion and brown color of the wrapper. Spain, France, Germany, Switzerland and Cuba's domestic market remained top consumers of Cuban cigars last year, while sales in Canada fell 7 percent, as stricter anti-smoking laws took hold, Garcia said.Like wine, the taste of top tobacco depends on the soil and climate in which it is grown. Sun-drenched plantations in the humid, western province of Pinar Del Rio have made Cuban cigars famous for centuries. Most produced on the island are hand-rolled and destined for premium sellers. Read More

COSTA RICAN CIGARS

This is an interesting Cigar Company from Costa Rica and they look well worth trying. Churchill was supposed to have had a Cuban on his lips 24/7 and the servants had to follow him around with a dustpan and brush. I must get this book......

During the Second World War, Churchill's cigar was such an important beacon of resistance that MI5, together with the nation's top scientists, tested the Prime Minister's supplies on mice rather than risk sabotage. Today Winston Churchill and his cigar remains a global icon, memorialised by a one-hundred-and-one-foot statue of a cigar in Australia, while his cigar stubs are treasured as relics. Using original archival research and exclusive interviews with Churchill's staff, Stephen McGinty, an award-winning journalist, explores Churchill's passion for cigars and the solace they brought. He also examines Churchill's lasting friendship with Antonio Giraudier, the Cuban businessman who for twenty years stocked Churchill's humidor, before fleeing Castro's revolution. MORE
Churchill's Cigar:
A Lifelong Love Affair Through War and Peace by Stephen McGinty £7.99
Availability : Usually dispatched within 24 hours Stock : 10+

OTHER GREAT CIGAR BOOKS

The Great Habano Factories by Adriano Martínez NEW! The American ban on Cuban cigars had led to a huge local industry increase and the production expansion of other islands in the Cuba region. I found these two articles on the Red Dot Cohiba and the Aruba cigars quite interesting."Aruhiba", a new cigar rolled from tobacco grown on the island. This new product, bound to attract attention, was the brainchild of Benjamin Petrochi. In the small, upscale cigar shop he opened June of 2006 next to the "Windmill", he sits, rolling and cutting his Aruban grown tobacco leaves, shaping them into the perfect thickness and length. Petrochi is a man who is passionate about his work. Having sold cigars from other countries for over a decade, six years ago he decided that he wanted to produce his own, from scratch. It is an arduous process, likened more to a labor of love, to produce the kind of cigar connoisseurs desire. Growing tobacco in Aruba is no easy feat and Petrochi has toiled endlessly for the last six years. Petrochi’s tobacco production is relatively small and he does everything himself, much the way things were done years ago. While Petrochi began using his tobacco two years ago to roll cigars for himself, it is just now that the tobacco is ready to be used to produce commercial quality cigars.Tobacco plants require nine months of cultivation. The challenges are many. "It’s not easy in Aruba; you have to contend with the weather and the insects. I have to fight the white flies every day," he said. Other sources have indicated that it may be derived from the Mayan word sikar, "tobacco."
Many Premium brands are available on Aruba.
Cigar tobacco is grown in significant quantities in such nations as Brazil, Cameroon, Cuba, Dominican Republic, Honduras, Indonesia, Mexico, Nicaragua and the United States of America. Cigars manufactured in Cuba are widely considered to be without peer, although many experts believe that the best offerings from Honduras and Nicaragua rival those from Cuba. The Cuban reputation is thought to arise from both the unique characteristics of the Vuelta Abajo district in the Pinar del Río Province at the west of the island, where a microclimate allows high-quality tobacco to be grown; and the skill of the Cuban cigar makers.Would you like to order Cigars for in Aruba please contact us for a price list and additional information. The cigars have a unique band with a couple of obvious red dots, one inside the black letter 'O' in the name Cohiba, and another inside a black circle on the side of the band. This unique band with red dots helps distinguish the cigars from their Cuban counterparts, which are not legal the United States. The "red dot" Cohibas are made with aged Dominican filler tobaccos and Cameroon wrappers, and do not contain any Cuban tobacco. The Cohiba cigar brand originated in Cuba, and is one of the most recognized and respected names in the industry, which sometimes makes it the victim of counterfeiters. However, General Cigar vigorously defends their trademark to exclusively market the Dominican Cohiba brand of cigars in the U.S. The Robusto that I reviewed was five inches long with a ring gauge of 49.
Flavor:

I have smoked these cigars on several occasions in the past, and found them to be somewhat strong on my palate. In hopes of mellowing one out, I aged this particular Robusto in my humidor for almost three years. Although the taste did become less harsh with age, the flavor was still not as mellow as I would have liked. This was definitely a full flavored stick with very deep tobacco tastes. I would not recommend such a full bodied cigar to beginners, as this cigar should be enjoyed by serious cigar smokers, only.
Draw and Construction:

The cigar was very well made, had an excellent draw, and did not require any relights. The cigar burned evenly and held a long ash. There were not any issues with the construction of the cigar to negatively impact my smoking experience.
Value:

When purchased in packs or boxes, Cohiba Robustos can cost around $7 per stick, but will cost more when purchased as singles. Full bodied cigars at the top of the flavor and strength spectrum are more expensive than milder stogies. In addition, distinguished brand names can command higher prices. However, these cigars would only be worth the price to veteran cigar enthusiasts who really enjoy full bodied cigars with very deep tobacco flavors. Beginners beware! More cigar Info
Related Articles
Review of the Montecristo 3 Cigar Made by Altadis in the Dominican Republic
Review of 5 Vegas Gold Robusto Cigar Made in Honduras
Review of Macanudo Hampton Court Cigar
Review of Black Pearl Rojo Toro Cigar Made in Nicaragua
Cigar Review of Partagas Robusto Cigar

Zino Davidoff Torpedo

Well as you would probably know if you have been following The Panther Family website a celebration was held and continues for the birth of Jemima Nikla Panther and as I often do savoured the moment with a good cigar. It is part of my family’s tradition to smoke Cuban cigars at special moments in our lives and has been passed down from one generation to another. Although Davidoff cigar tobacco comes from the Dominican Republic their cigar blending and quality are extremely good. I have regularly reached out for various styles of the Davidoff range and they never let you down in the satisfaction department. Good quality very enjoyable, nicely wrapped, nice aroma and flavour. On this special occasion I chose the Zino Torpedo Cigar as it is one of my favorites and we most certainly ploughed our way through a bushel or two with our large family and friends dropping in to wish Jemima well. Believe it or not these cigars are well priced and can be purchased at a low box price. The Torpedo brings the brand to eight sizes and is the only shaped cigar in the line. It measures 5 inches by 54 ring with a suggested retail price of $7.80, or $156 per box of 20. The cigar comprises an Ecuadorian Connecticut-sun-grown wrapper, Honduran binder, and filler from Honduras and the Dominican Republic. Zino Davidoff born on 11 March 1906 in the Ukrainian city of Kiev was a man with a keen sense of the essential, whom knew how to enjoy that special moment. "Smoke less, but smoke better and smoke longer making a cult of it a philosophy!" this was his life and legacy. Zino’s goal was to enrich his and others lives through pleasure and he never lost sight of this aim. In 1930 he expanded the family tobacco shop in Geneva by adding the first special cellar for optimum storage of cigars. In 1946 he created his famous "Chateau" line of cigars which he named after great Bordeaux wines. 1970 saw him join forces with his long standing friend Dr. Ernst Schneider and the acquisition of the Geneva shop by the old established family business Oettinger from Basel. With this began the development of Davidoff into a sought-after brand that met with success across the globe. Then as now Davidoff cigars have always been an art in their own right and satisfy the most discerning customers. The tobaccos used are sourced in the Dominican Republic, yet each series of Davidoff cigars has its own special composition and its own individual character. The secret to the success of Davidoff products lies in the seamless intertwining of tradition, innovation and a sense of elegant functionality.

Davidoff 100 year selection offerSpecially selected for Baronne Philippine de Rothschild, the Zino Mouton Cadet, handmade in Honduras, offers connoisseurs a cigar rich in aroma, yet mild to the taste. http://www.imperialcigar.com/

http://www.simplycigars.co.uk/davidoff-legend-myth-reality-new-p-1027.html

Punch Cigars

There was a period of time when I used to smoke Cuban Punch Cigars almost on a daily basis and I fondly remember the Friday night ritual at the Hyatt hotel cigar piano room with my friend Tony Higgins. Punch are a great reliable smoke every time you light one and they have a full and extensive range of styles. I had a little bit of good news yesterday and so I decided to break out one of my special Punch cigars that I purchased in 2006; a limited edition Diademas Extra No.1. This cigar is a classic great flavour, aroma and plume; The ash holds half way confirming its construction. Really enjoyable cigars. These cigars were a limited edition however they can still be purchased if you can be bothered to hunt them down. Well worth the effort!

Created in 1840 by Manuel Lopez, this line takes its name from the popular character of Punch so widely seen in English puppetry in the 19th century. Today's lithographed boxes still show the comically-dressed Punch enjoying a cigar while his faithful pet stands by, questioning why he is wearing a rainbow-coloured collar. The cigars are quite popular, with the Punch Punch model the object of affection by many devoted followers. This full flavoured brand was made by Corujo y Cia. after 1859 and prior to nationalization, was owned by F. Palicio y Cia.
Year of foundation: 1840
Tobacco Country: Cuba
Tobacco Procedence: Vuelta Abajo
Factory: La Corona

FIGUARDOS

You would have seen the list of my posts on favourite cigars, storage and selection. However I have prepared an information list and a how to select and purchase list to help new Cigar smokers.

The long panatela is a favourite of mine for an easy smoke.

Long Panatela (7 1/2" x 38)

Here is a list of my most preferred Cuban Cigars.
CORONAS Petit Corona (5" x 42)

Corona (5 1/2" x 42)

Corona Extra (5 1/2" x 46)

Robusto1 (5" x 50)

Long Corona (6" x 42)

Toro (6" x 50)

Lonsdale (6 1/2" x 42)

Grand Corona (6 1/2" x 46)

Churchill2 (7" x 47)

Giant Corona (7 1/2" x 44)

Double Corona (7 3/4" x 49)
FIGUARDOS The larger a cigar is the harder it is to make therefore new rollers often start with the Petit Corona working their way up. The complexities involved in rolling something as large as a Giant cigar is very great hence it falls into the difficult to make category known as Figuardos. Please note that the terms Diedamas and Giant are interchangable.

For Example the Punch Grand Cru Diedamas Deluxe (8 x 52)

Petite Belicoso (5" x 50)

Belicoso (6" x 50)

Torpedo (6 1/2" x 52)
Pyramid (7" x various)

Next to the Torpedo the Pyramid probably one of the most recogonized of the Figuardos and my favourite style of Cuban cigar. Unlike the Torpedo, which tapers in the last inch or two, the Pyramid tapers from head to foot. The Pyramid size is popular everywhere with the Cuban Montechristo No. 2 being one of the most famous cigars of all time.
Giant4 (9" x52)

Purchase Selection
Look for open boxes in your tobacconist's humidor that have been there for a while. Cigars are often shipped "wet" to retard drying, and should stabilize for a week or more in a proper environment before smoking. Grab them too soon and they may have only stabilized on the exposed side, causing uneven burning. You can compensate just as easily by putting your purchases in your own humidor for a week before smoking.
Squeeze the cigar gently as It should give but not be too soft. Don't roll it in your fingers as some suggest this can damage the wrapper. Squeeze gently up and down the body to look for lumps or soft spots. A good cigar should have neither. Remember to be gently. Even if you don't buy that cigar somebody else might so don't damage it!

Inspect the wrapper for odd discolorations, looseness or cracks. The wrapper should be smooth and tight and not damaged on either end. Smaller veins are good to watch for as these often smoke smoother, However compare your single to other cigars with the same wrapper! Veins appear differently in different wrapper types.
Look at the tobacco in the exposed end. Some variation of color is normal, as most cigars are made from a blend of tobaccos. What you're watching for is extreme or abrupt color changes. This sometimes means an inferior leaf was used, or the leaves weren't laid together properly in the bunching process. Off tastes and uneven burns will often be the result.

El Rey del Mundo

El Rey del Mundo Choix Supreme are a great smoke and the quality continues from the first to the last in the box.I have not had one of these in some years, however the one I was given to see the new year in was magnificent and unusual to find these days as many cigars only have hints of what they once were. From the first light they start off quite mellow but continue to evolve throughout to a nice rich flavourful finish; they burn well and collect and hold their ash extremely well. Well known for it's dark and oily wrappers, it was one of the most expensive Havanas available in the middle of the 20th century. The El Rey del Mundo factory still produces this brand and numerous others cigars under the name Lazaro Pena today in a wide variety of models that are considered to be light in strength.

Factory History

In 1897, the brand was bought by the Association Rodríguez- Argüelles & Co.; three years later, in 1903, the Association dissolved and the Cuban enterprise Romeo y Julieta Cigar Factory was created.

The owner José Fernández Rodríguez, a Spanish emigrant in Cuba, increased the productivity of his employees through a system of incentives, which permitted to increase the cigars’ production and their quality. He also introduced bands or personalized vitolas to some of his most selected clients.
There were printed more than 20 000 different vitolas. He also used publicity tricks as to name his own racing horse after the name of the brand, and took it to the most important races in Europe.

On the other hand, he also opened a shop in the hotel Capulet in Verona, the city where Shakespeare’s the drama, Romeo and Juliet, took place. A friend of mine was going to Mexico a month ago and I asked him if he could try to find a Cuban Trinidad Cigar of any model and knowing my taste my friend managed to purchase a Cuban Trinidad Robusto. I met my friend in Singapore last week and we both enjoyed the Robusto and here is our joint report on this historical cigar.

The construction and draw of these fine Cuban Cigars is perfection plus. The aroma, flavour and palate are so delicious that I wish my friend could have found a whole box and we can see why they are so difficult to get our hands on. The burn is even and it has a good visual plume and the ash holds firm and solid well into half way through the smoke and it is only to the brave whom do not want to risk getting ash down their Armani who continue onwards!. The Trinidad cigar is a medium to mild smoke; however the construction, aroma, flavour and long ash make up for any short fall in strength. A very good Robusto and I will definitely be looking to find more and will purchase anywhere I can find them!

The Cuban Trinidad brand was first produced in 1969 at the El Laguito factory in Havana. The Trinidad cigar received much attention in Cigar Aficionado after an interview with Avelino Lara whom managed the El Laguito factory. Lara claimed that Trinidad was an ultra exclusive brand that only Fidel Castro was authorized to hand out as diplomatic gifts. Lara also claimed Trinidad’s were of a higher quality than the famous Cohiba that had formerly been the diplomatic exclusive brand before their mass market release in 1982. Both the Cohiba and Trinidad brands started out as exclusive Cuban gifts for diplomats and high ranking officials or high profile guests!

Robusto Extra - 6 1/8" x 50 (156 x 19.84mm) a Super Robusto
Named after one of Cuba's most beautiful cities the Trinidad is produced only in the El Laguito factory and packaged in an "unusual"quantity of 24 cigars as well as in cabinets of 50.

Bolivar

One of the cigars I have found readily available in just about every country I have been is the Bolivar brand and I have been drawn to this brand because of the dark tobacco leaf wrapper. The first Cuban Bolivar I enjoyed was in London at the Victoria Sporting Club Casino in Edgware Road which we used to frequent about three times a week in those days. I remember this memory clearly because I was standing around a craps table during a heavy game with an edge three deep and the shooter was Tele Savalas the movie star who was more famous as Kojack of the TV show then. Bolivar make a great cigar and I have lit more than one over the years and have sampled all they have to offer.

The Spanish industrialist Jose F. Rocha registered a cigar trademark with the name of the liberator Simón Bolivar which was acquired at a later stage by Cifuentes the firm owning Partagás whom I have written about in previous posts. Bolivar have been a member of the group of trademarks produced in that factory ever since. Its tobacco comes from Vuelta Abajo most famous for Cigar tobacco leaf and also some wrappers from this Havana province. Bolivar cigars are known for their strength which is somewhere between mid to strong with a full flavour and pleasant aroma.

As I have said the dark wrappers with reddish tones attract me as I prefer the flavour, aroma and strength that normally come with these wrappers. There are over twenty styles in the market at the moment and the Coronas Gigantes or the Churchill which was my father’s favourite choice and the only one that he would smoke; this cigar model stands out among the best of this trademark. Most people know the Bolivar Cigars from the Gold Medal Lonsdale style which is immediately identified by the golden wrapper which only covers half of the cigar.

Cusano Brothers

You need to check this website out for yourself as the product looks very interesting indeed. In the early days in Beijing going back many, many years ago there were not that many places to go outside of your hotel unlike now. I had several favourite places to frequent such as the Mexican Wave in Jianguomen not far from Tianmen Square. The owner Greg Elliott opened his bar in the centre of expat territory amongst all of the big Western companies and Embassy’s. Greg’s bar was one of the first if not the first Western bar restaurant and many influential people gathered there to do business and still do today. I met many great people there and accomplished more from my involvement and interaction in the Wave than I did elsewhere due to Greg’s now famous bar.

I was directed to the International Press Club Bar found at the back of the then Sheraton International Hotel in the next parallel Road across from the Mexican Wave to find the best Cigars available at that time. I found it amazing that China being a communist country did not have Cuban Cigars readily available and that the main selection of Cigars was from the Philippines, Dominican Republic and Jamaica. The most popular and easiest cigars to buy were from Holland and available at every bar, supermarket outlets. I found the Philippine Cigars interesting and will do a post about them in the near future. I found and enjoyed my first Macanudo Cigar is this great journalist western environment. I like the dark coloured tobacco and therefore was attracted to the Macanudo and the aroma and flavour were extremely satisfying.

The Macanudo Cigar range are a very popular brand and have gained established a big slice of the market over the years since I began smoking cigars. There are also many females that enjoy Macanudo Cigars due to the slim shape and the fact that you can buy flavoured cigars such as vanilla and many others. I enjoy the Macanudo Pyramid and Robusto but have enjoyed just about all of the Macanudo range over the years. Macanudo cigars have their own distinctive taste and flavour and have developed the cigar to a specific market. Macanudo grows, cures and ages its own Connecticut Shade the tobacco most in demand for premium cigar wrappers.

Macanudo ages the wrapper leaves a second time in the traditional Cuban way. Macanudo have built their name by supplying a consistent product premium cigar that delivers exactly what the customer is looking for. The best carefully hand selected premium filler tobaccos from Jamaica and the Dominican Republic make the Macanudo sought after for its mildness and flavor by knowledgeable cigar smokers everywhere. Macanudo was originally the name of a frontmark produced in Jamaica by the makers of the Cuban brand of Punch. In 1971, General Cigar Company introduced a new cigar named Macanudo as a brand unto itself. Developed in Jamaica under the creative leadership of Ramón Cifuentes, the legendary Cuban cigar master of Partagas, Macanudo soon became the leading premium cigar and remains so today.

Fonseca

The first Fonseca cigar that I tried was the Fonseca No.1 at the Oriental Hotel Cigar Club Bar in Bangkok and I must say the experience was enormously enjoyable. I do not know much about Fonseca Cigars as I have not found them readily available to purchase and therefore they have never been high on my list for selection. I must say that each and every time I have had a Fonseca Cigar that they have been high quality and tremendously satisfying. A delicate and exquisite cigar Fonseca are the only Cuban Cigar brand to offer cigars that are wrapped in fine delicate and virtually transparent paper. It is believed that the paper wrapping aids the cigar helping to maintain optimal humidity at a constant level. The paper wrapper also helps to protect the delicate cigar from splitting or other damage. Cigar lovers enjoy the unique look of the Fonseca Cigar. The Spaniard Don Francisco Fonseca first registered the Fonseca trademark in 1907 and early in the 20th century the Fonseca Cuban cigar was manufactured in several different Havana cigar factories. Fonseca Cuban cigars are now produced in Quivic?n a small town in the province of Havana.

Fonseca No. 1 HRSize Strength Rating6 3/8 x 44

Montecristo

Everyone including people who do not smoke cigars have always heard of the Montecristo No2 and is a cliché or throw away line. Like all the most famous Cuban Cigar brands I have tried every single Montecristo cigar from their range.

The Montecristo brand was created in 1935 by Menéndez, García y Cía then the owners of the popular H. Upmann brand of cigars which are another of my favourite cigars that were enjoyed by President J.F Kennedy and were in fact his favourite brand of Cubans. Having just purchased the H. Upmann brand from J. Frankau & Co. Menéndez and García decided to extend the range of the regular H. Upmann line called the H. Upmann Montecristo Selection. The story has it that the Montecristo brand acquired its name from the “Count De Montecristo” novel that was read to the rollers on the floor whilst producing the cigars. London England has been responsible for the success of many of the cigar brands and Alfred Dunhill can most certainly take the claim for the worldwide success of the Montecristo Cigar accounting for some 50% of the total cigar sales.
If Montecristo is not Cuba's best cigar it most certainly is its biggest ambassador exporting over 30 million cigars each year and shipped with the famous brown and white band. This huge volume makes it necessary for the brand to be produced in seven different factories. Most are in Havana including H. Upmann, La Corona, Partagas and Moncada. Most of these factories produce the ubiquitous Montecristo No. 4, called the Mareva by cigar rollers. About 20 million are made each year. H. Upmann has been making Montecristo the longest, since its original owners the Menendez family founded the brand in 1934. The current H. Columbus visited the island of Cuba and his sailors were introduced to tobacco called "Cohiba" by the natives whom literally took a bunch of dried leaves placing them in a pipe lighting and smoking them.

Cohiba Cuban cigars were introduced initially to non diplomats and a small range was provided being the Lanceros, the Coronas Especiales and the Panatelas. Three more Cigars were then added to the brand in 1989 being the Esplйndidos and the Robustos which are two of my favourite cigars and the Exquisitos. The Siglo range of Cohiba are extremely popular and the Siglo V Cohiba is still considered by many to be the number one cigar in the Cohiba range and of course only the finest tobacco leaves are used in the making of Cohiba cigars.

The Cohíba brand of Cigars was originally a private brand supplied exclusively to Fidel Castro and his high level Cuban government and communist party officials and also given as diplomatic gifts. The original cigars were initially smoked by one of Fidel Castro's bodyguards named "Chicho Perez” which Castro noticed as the aromatic flavour would fill the air. When Chicho was asked by Castro what brand he was smoking replied that it was hand rolled for him by a friend who gave him some of these special cigars as gifts.

The man who made these cigars was a cigar roller who worked at the La Corona factory in Havana named Eduardo Rivera. Castro approached Rivera about rolling cigars for him personally and set him up with five other rollers in a former diplomats mansion in Havana that later became the first cigar factory to be staffed entirely by female cigar rollers; Castro was extremely fond of the long thin cigars rolled for him and these cigars later became known as Lancero and Corona Especial. Like all of the famous Cuban Cigar makers there are limited or special editions produced that are outside of the regular production range, however my personal favourite Cohiba are the Piramid, Robusto and the Esplendido pictured below.

Dutch Cigars

I lived in Beijing for a period of time and a friend of mine was the distributor of Dutch Cigars selling them to all major outlets such as supermarkets, tobacconists, bars , clubs and other various outlets. My friend used to leave a collection of Dutch Cigars in a Spanish Cedar wood cabinet behind my two favourite bars and nightclub continually refilling the box so that it was never empty. He never used to charge me for them either which is truly amazing although for some reason I have always been blessed with such good friends due to my reciprocal generosity!

It was only on my first visit to Indonesia that I realised that the bulk of the Cigar tobacco leaf is supplied to Holland by Indonesia as there are many quality tobacco plantations. I do not sleep for long periods of time only needing a couple of hours sleep a day to satisfy my body rest requirements and I do my grocery shopping between 12pm and 6am and I have found a great 24 hour supermarket that has a group of restaurants, bars, cafes and a little tobacconist that sells a huge selection of Indonesian Cigars and cigarettes.

I was amazed to find some incredible Coronas and other smaller cigars on offer that were really good quality. I found a Cigar called Macho in the Lanceros, Panatella style made famous by Fidel Castro and later Clint Eastward in the Spaghetti Westerns and this Cigar was a really good quality Cigar and so unbelievably well priced. The Macho has a typical clove essence used in many of the famous Indonesian cigarettes as there is a dried clove placed within the box; the Macho also has a mild sweet flavour that I found very pleasant and similar to the Macanudo range of Cigars. although the Dutch cigars are not in the same range as Cuban cigars they are a very nice alternative sometimes and particularly when Cubans are not readily available for purchase!

Holland have a great cigar history and brand names that I grew up with in England; every Christmas watching the men and relatives of the family smoking, Henry Wintermans, Willem and Manakin cigars....

Partagas

Don Jaime Partagás Ravelo like all of the big names in the Cuban tobacco business had spent many years working in the industry before establishing his own factory, The “Real Fábricas de Tabaco Partagás” which became one of the
biggest at that time and roughly translated means “Royal Tobacco Factory”.

Purchasing the Cigar factory was a sound business move as Don Jaime owned many of the best plantations in the Vuelta Abajo tobacco area in Cuba giving him an unlimited source of the best quality leaves making his brand extremely popular. When Don Jaime died the factory was totally controlled by the Cifuentes family whom acquired many brands such as Bolivar and H. Upmann which have many of my favourite style cigars in their range. Partagas Cigars are
always my first choice if the retail establishment has the items I am looking for, however there are always limited editions to be purchased. Sometimes the cigars come without cigar bands altogether called “naked”.

My Favourite Cigars

Not being a smoker the first cigars that I tried were like most men at celebrations such as weddings or the birth of children. I always remember the manikin television advertisements in England as there where many popular Dutch cigars enjoyed in Europe and still are today. Later in life after being educated in the art of a fine Cuban cigar and having tried so many of the most popular brands of Cubans; I started to experiment and diversify as by now I had reached the stage preferring different aromas and tastes. Also I purchased different size leather cigar travel holders allowing me to carry to various occasions. Although I have my preferred Cuban cigars I still like to try as many kinds as are available. I have prepared a short list of my favourite Cuban Cigars that I will post here over the next few weeks and even though these cigars are popular brands they are not always readily available for purchase and you may have to shop around.

Don José Gener y Batet arrived in Cuba from Spain in 1831 as a teenager working with his uncle at his plantation in Vuelta Abajo. Many years later he opened his own cigar factory in Havana producing a cigar range of his own La Escepción. Around 1865 he used money from his factory to purchase one of the best tobacco farms in Vuelta Abajo registering the cigar brand Hoyo de Monterrey which became extremely popular with the British making Hoyo de Monterrey one of the bigest Cigar factories in Cuba. His Daughter took over the factory when he died keeping it in the family for a further thirty years. The Fernández, Palicio y Cía factory bought Hoyo de Monterrey and La Escepción brands adding them to their own brand Punch which I will also be talking about later as Punch is also one of the cigars I smoke frequently.

The embargo against Cuba by the United States made Fernando Palicio flee Cuba to Florida, selling the popular brands to the Villazon family that have continued to produce Punch and Hoyo de Monterrey cigars from Honduran tobacco for the lucrative American market. Cuba nationalized the tobacco industry and Hoyo de Monterrey continued producing for the global Cuban Cigar market. My two personal favourite cigars from the Hoyo de Monterrey range are the Lusitania and Epicure No 2 Robusto.

Cigar Cutters

Cigar cutters remove or penetrate the top of the cigar before the cigar can be lit. The most popular types of cuts are the straight cut, the wedge or V shaped cut and the hole punch. The type of cut to make is based on personal preference and the size and or shape of the cigar. Regular Cigar smokers do not always make the same type of cut or use the same kind of cutter. The straight cut is probably used the most as these are the most common and easy to purchase and generally preferred on cigars with a small ring gauge or thinner cigars.

The most basic type of cutter used to make straight cuts is the single blade guillotine. The double blade guillotine is preferred by many aficionados because it usually makes a cleaner cut. Cigar scissors are also used to make straight cuts, and may be the best choice for cutting the cigar at the exact spot you intend. However, the guillotines are usually the most practical, the least expensive, and can be easily and safely carried in the pocket of your shirt or trousers.

The wedge or V shape cutter resembles the guillotine cutter, however the shape of the blade slices a wedge into the cap of the cigar instead of cutting it completely off. The cutter is designed to slice from one side and at the same depth so there is no danger of cutting too deep.
I have never had much luck with hole punch cutters and tend to split the cigar causing it to unravel.

As for the single and double blade guillotine cigar cutters It took many years to perfect the cut as you can take of too much or too little affecting the draw of the cigar and sometimes leaving fraid edges. However these two cutters are the most accessible and the ones I have used the most like most other cigar smokers.

My favourite is the wedge cutter as it gives a good clean cut every time and has a nice smooth action. The wedge cutter is not as easy to acquire and extremely popular as every time I buy one it immediately goes missing!!!

Cigar Labels

This label will appear on the cigar box of Machine made Cuban cigars that are made in Cuba.Cubatabaco and Habanos SA handle all of the Cuban cigar business and the quality control that promote the export distribution. It was heavy and solid in the hand and looked sleek in design with that famous ping sound every time you flip the top to ignite your smoke.I own two DuPont lighters the classic black and gold and the gold featured in this post. I also have a Dunhill Cigar lighter purchased for me by my brother Dennis also featured here. I also have one of the Colibre lighters that are great for Cigar functions or for lighting your Cigar outdoors as the flame is guaranteed to light in Gail force winds every single time.Having a good quality lighter is a great talking motivator and they look very impressive.

Humidors

Cigar tobacco leaves are harvested and aged using a process that combines the use of heat with shade which reduces the sugar and water content without causing the large leaves to erode or rot. This being the stage, commonly known as curing, takes up to forty five days varying substantially and depends upon climate conditions as well as the construction of barns that are used to store the harvested tobacco. The curing process is manipulated based upon the type of tobacco, and the desired color of the leaf. The second part of the process, known as fermentation, is a slow process that allows the leaf to die slowly. The humidity or temperature is regulated ensuring that the delicate leaf continues to ferment, so as not to disintegrate and it is at this stage that the leaf acquires its aroma, flavor burning characteristics. After there has been a substantial aging period the leaves are separated into different groups that will determine quality and appearance for either filler or wrapper. During this process, the leaves are continually moistened and handled carefully to ensure that each leaf is best used according to its individual qualities. The leaves are continually baled and inspected repeatedly during this aging process. Once the leaf has matured to the manufacturer’s specifications it will be sent for cigar production.Experienced cigar rollers are able to produce literally hundreds of exquisite and almost identical cigars daily. Cigar rollers must keep the tobacco moist and especially the wrappers. The cigar rollers use special knives that are known as a chaveta speedily shaping the form of the filler and wrapper leaves to perfection. Once the cigars are rolled they are stored in wooden forms to dry in which their uncapped ends are cut to a uniform size. The cigar is now a complete product that can to the best of any one's knowledge be kept indefinitely if properly stored. Long term cigar aging requires significantly lower storage temperatures and for example forty degrees Fahrenheit is recommended for fifty year storage. The higher temperatures which are usually used in standard cigar storage will cause the deterioration of the cigar after several years that will result in total flavour lose. After buying your cigars the correct storage is essential and by keeping the cigars in a special wooden box, or humidor where the temperature and conditions can be carefully regulated for a very long time. Even if cigars become dry they can be successfully humidified as long as they have not been mishandled.Premium brands of cigars use a myriad of varieties of tobacco for either filler or wrapper. Premium cigars known as long filler cigars are of a higher quality because they use long leaves throughout the entire length of the cigar. These cigars also use a third variety of tobacco leaf known as a binder between the filler and the outer shell or wrapper; allowing the rollers the use of much more delicate and attractive leaves as a wrapper. High quality cigar makers almost always blend a variety of different tobacco. Cuban long filler cigars combine tobacco from different locations around the island to blend various flavors.

Cigar StorageHumidity in your humidor should be around 65 degrees to 75 degrees and if there is empty space in the humidor the humidity will drop.Humidor casings are typically made nowadays of a wood board and the interior is a Cedar or mahogany and is the most popular because it retains moisture helping to maintain humidity also the cedar wood box can add to the aroma of the cigarsAfter purchasing your humidor you will need to take a moist cloth and wipe down the interior to remove any dust. A small container of water is then placed inside the humidor for around twelve hours with the lid shut. If there is no or little water left inside then you will need to repeat the process for another twenty four hours. When the liquid in the container stops evaporating you can now place your cigars inside. This process keeps the wood moist which will then keep your cigars moist, also the use of distilled water is good because it is pure and lacks the minerals, bacteria and additives found in household tap water. If you are a big fan, collector and smoker of Cuban Cigars you can have a room size Humidor built to go with your fine wine cellar!

Cigar Facts

Cigar history goes back approximately two thousand years, however The origins of the the cigar itself are lost in time and Some scholars believe the word cigar is taken from the word sikar which is the Mayan word for smoking. There is a big cigar history within Central America dating back to the Mayans and Aztecs; They were known to have smoked tubes of loosely rolled tobacco leaves similar to the present day cigars.
When Columbus discovered the West Indies and other explorers whom visited the American continent numerous accounts
were written of these New World people who smoked tobacco and also used it for chew and as snuff for medicinal properties then used in their ceremonies.I remember an extremely funny record made by Bob Newhart depicting Sir Walter Raileigh upon his return from the America's explaining how you place it in your mouth and inhale the smoke. Hilarious!

Smoking came to Europe with the return of Columbus from the New World in 1492. He had been offered some dried leaves as a token of friendship and his men had witnessed how these leaves were used. Columbus himself was not particularly impressed by the custom, but soon Spanish and other European sailors fell for the habit, followed by the
conquistador's and colonists. The introduction of tobacco seeds or plants is attributed to Ramon Pane whom was Columbus priest on his second voyage. In due course the returning conquistador's introduced tobacco smoking to Spain and Portugal. The habit was considered a sign of affluence that then spread to France through the French
ambassador to Portugal Jean Nicot in 1560 whom the herb was given its botanical name Nicotiana tabacum the Latin name for tobacco.

Tobacco was introduced to England around 1565 when Hawkins returned from a voyage to America; Sir Walter Raleigh is believed to be chiefly responsible for making the
smoking habit fashionable. Sailors were really the first to be seen smoking cigars around 1557. It's always the sailors right!!

At the turn of the century smoking was becoming fashion with the upper classes although for many years the habit was still frowned upon by their womenfolk to such an extent that the men had to take themselves off to the kitchen or the stables, "So nothings changed then!" See my post on "Smoking Jackets". Although the first tobacco plantations were set up in Virginia in 1612, and Maryland in 1631, tobacco was smoked only in pipes in the American colonies. The cigar itself is thought not to have arrived until after 1762 when Israel Putnam an American general in the Revolutionary War returned from Cuba where he had been an officer in the British army. He came back to his home in Connecticut with a selection of Havana cigars and large amounts of Cuban tobacco. Not long after this cigar factories were set up in the Hartford area. Production of the leaves started in the 1820s and Connecticut tobacco today provides among the best wrapper leaves to be found outside Cuba. In the early 19th century not only were Cuban cigars being imported into the United States but domestic production was also taking off. The mid 1800's saw the cigar become well accepted and by the turn of the century cigar smoking was the most favoured of all smoking habits.

During the great depression and around the 1920's the total consumption of tobacco fell, cigar manufacturers turned to promoting smokers with their brands including beautifully designed, colored inserts in their packaging and boxes in order to attract cigar smokers a tradition that continues to this day with most manufacturers.

The 16th century saw Cuba lead the way in cigar production seeing Cuban peasants became tobacco growers and later on the cigar became the country's national symbol and the Havana cigar became recognized as the world's finest. When Fidel Castro took over the reigns leading to the subsequent United States embargo that started events that began to challenge Havana's supremacy in the world of cigars. Many Cuban cigar producers took their skills and seeds to the Caribbean, Dominican Republic, Honduras and Mexico and began producing high quality premium and super premium cigars for the American public. The Dominican Republic alone produces almost half of the hand made cigars sold in the Americas.I have enjoyed just about every cigar you can name and although I have enjoyed them all, You still can't
beat a pure Cuban Cigar!

Smoking Jacket

The smoking jacket was worn by smokers in an era past, however the well heeled establishment and extremely wealthy individuals among us still make use of these practical garments. Generally the cigar was the order of the day, although pipes and cigarettes were also enjoyed.

It is actually a very nice way to partake of a cigar and perhaps a tradition lost to most of us and it seems that we have come full circle with regards to smokers being segregated! However whilst net surfing today I came across this fantastic fourth generation cigar family company that had been originally started by a great grandfather from the 1900's.

The cigar family originally from Cuba ventured to Miami Florida USA like so many other Cubans during the revolution taking with them experienced cigar workers and hand cigar rollers with over twenty and thirty years knowledge gained from well known and established brand factories.

Although the company profile and history may be a sales pitch it still has many interesting comments and if you click to the company website and click on Cigar Tips you will find some extremely helpful and worthwhile hints and knowledge. Like me you will probably be interested in trying a Cuban cigar made in Miami by traditional Cubans and methods using the well established online mailing system. Also check out the traditional Cuban coffee and espresso machine!

Profile of a Cigar Lover

My biggest passion in life and truly my only vice is cigars as there is nothing like a Cuban Cigar. I have regularly attended cigar nights both for pleasure and business as this is a perfect way for me to combine the two!

You probably think that there is not much to learn from a cigar night; however the opposite is the fact because the history of cigars goes back hundreds of years and a cigar connoisseur really needs to know his product. Like all knowledge it is something of rare beauty to hear people talk about a product or subject that they are totally consumed by. Even with the knowledge you learn through the years of both smoking and indeed shopping for good cigars, as it is no simple task to acquire good quality cigars easily!

You still get great tips from the connoisseurs who will often bring famous cigars that are not available at a retail level and the story and the history attached to the cigars and indeed the cigar factories is an incredible and captivating story. I have read many books on cigars that almost always show the same and most famous brands that can be purchased in some countries but not all. However the most famous and most expensive cigars never make it to the retail tobacconists and cigar bars and many of the highest quality brands are made to order for an exclusive worldwide client list.

In recent times there have been many forgeries or copies made outside of Cuba flooding the black market in such places as America where I believe a ban still remains on Cuban cigars. The only thing that looks genuine about the forged knock off cigars is the label as often the cigars are dry with no aroma or flavour. There have been many success stories of cigars outside of Cuba where the Cuban Cigar tobacco leafs have been taken to areas with similar weather and soil however the soil and climate in Cuba is the reason that everybody still insists on having the original Cuban Cigar.
